Em resumo

Ko Phi Phi works as a day trip from Phuket or Krabi if you only want Maya Bay and snorkeling, but one night is better because the island is crowded from late morning to mid-afternoon. Ferries take roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, and Maya Bay limits landing and swimming and closes for part of the monsoon. Check current rules and ferry times for your dates.

Day trip or overnight? The verdict

Ko Phi Phi works as a day trip from Phuket or Krabi, but one night is better because the island is crowded from late morning to mid-afternoon. A day trip gets you Maya Bay, a snorkeling stop and a quick look at Tonsai Village. It leaves little time to swim, walk to the viewpoint or see the beaches without a crowd. The Ko Phi Phi travel guide has the full picture, and the wider Thailand travel guide shows where the island fits in a longer route.

Choose the day trip if you have a single spare day on the Andaman coast, the weather is calm and you mostly want to tick off the famous bay and some snorkeling. Choose the overnight if you want the beaches at sunrise and sunset, a quiet dinner and time for the viewpoint. The two options cost about the same in effort, because a ferry day eats most of the hours anyway.

Season matters too. From November to April the sea is usually calm and boats run on schedule. From about June to October the crossing can be rough and sailings are cancelled, which makes a same-day return risky if you have a flight that evening. Check the best time to visit Thailand before you commit to dates.

Getting there: ferry, speedboat or tour

There are three ways to reach Ko Phi Phi. The public ferry from Phuket leaves from Rassada pier and takes roughly two hours. The ferry from Krabi leaves from a pier outside Krabi Town, with the main departures from Klong Jilad, and takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. A speedboat tour from either coast takes less time and usually includes Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and snorkeling stops, with a return in the afternoon.

Ferries are cheaper and simpler if you plan to stay. Speedboat tours are better for a day trip, because they are timed around the island's sights and include stops that a public ferry does not. The trade-off is that tours move in groups and follow a fixed schedule, so you cannot choose when to leave a place.

Schedules vary by season and by operator, and prices change, so check current times on your booking page. Arrive at the pier early, because queues at the ticket desks build in the morning in the high season. If you are coming from Ko Lanta, ferries run in the high season and stop for much of the monsoon, so confirm sailings. Our guide to getting around Thailand covers ferry and transfer options.

What Maya Bay rules mean for your visit

Maya Bay, on the neighboring island of Phi Phi Leh, became famous after a film and was closed for several years to let the reef recover. It reopened with new rules: boats no longer anchor in the bay, visitors land at a pier on the back side of the island and walk to the beach, and the number of visitors and the time you can spend are limited. Swimming in the bay itself has been restricted, so the visit is a walk and a photograph, not a beach swim.

For official information, start with the Department of National Parks site, and ask your operator which pier they use and how long you will have on the beach. A morning departure usually means fewer people than an afternoon one. If the bay is closed for your dates, the nearby Pileh Lagoon, Monkey Beach and snorkeling stops still make a day on the water.

Day trip plan: what fits

A realistic day trip leaves Phuket or Ao Nang around 8am. A speedboat crosses in under two hours, with a first snorkeling stop on the way. Maya Bay comes mid-morning, followed by Pileh Lagoon and a swim near Phi Phi Leh. Lunch is on Phi Phi Don at Tonsai Village, and there is usually an hour or two to walk, swim or climb to the viewpoint before the return boat leaves in the afternoon.

It is doable and fun, but it moves quickly. If you must choose, skip the souvenir stops and keep the snorkeling and the viewpoint. On a day with poor visibility or rough water, consider rebooking. Do not schedule a flight for the evening of a day trip in the rainy season, because delays are common.

Overnight: what one night adds

One night lets you see the island after the day boats have left. The beaches are quieter in the evening, the viewpoint is better at sunset or sunrise than at midday, and you can eat dinner without a rush. It also lets you reach Maya Bay with an early boat, when the bay is least crowded, then return for a slow breakfast.

Where to sleep depends on your plan. Tonsai Village puts you next to the pier and restaurants, Loh Dalum Bay gives you a calmer swim, Long Beach suits snorkelers and Laem Tong suits resort stays. Our guide on where to stay on Ko Phi Phi compares four bases, with the walk or boat from the pier for each. Book early for December to February.

If you are choosing between islands, read Phi Phi, Lanta or Railay, because a quieter base nearby may suit you better than a night in the busiest village. Many travelers combine a night here with a longer stay at Railay or on Ko Lanta.

Weather, seas and when not to go

The Andaman coast has a dry season from roughly November to April and a rainy season from about May to October. In the rainy season, the sea is rougher, ferries are cancelled more often and some restaurants and resorts close. A same-day return is risky if you have a flight, so build a spare day before any departure from Phuket or Krabi.

If the forecast is poor, do not force the trip. Rebook for another day, or swap Phi Phi for a quieter stay on the mainland coast. Check weather and ferry notices the evening before and again that morning, and ask your operator about their cancellation policy before you pay. Some operators allow free changes in bad weather, and some do not.

Crowds follow the season and the day of the week. The busiest days are in the high season around Christmas, New Year and other holidays, and boats fill late morning and early afternoon. A weekday, an early start or an overnight stay avoids much of it. Add an eSIM so your booking, maps and messages work at the pier, and check that your travel insurance covers cancelled ferries and snorkeling before you go.

Finally, check the entry rules for your passport before you fly. Thailand's visa-exempt stay and the arrival card are covered in our Thailand entry rules guide, and they apply well before you reach the ferry.

What to pack and how to protect your day

A Phi Phi day is wet, sunny and sandy, so pack for all three. Bring a swimsuit under your clothes, a quick-dry towel, reef-safe sunscreen, a rash vest if you burn easily and a small dry bag for your phone and cards. Sandals that can get wet are more useful than trainers, because boat landings and beach pontoons are often awash. Carry a refillable bottle, since plastic is a concern for the park and drinks on the island cost more than on the mainland.

Leave valuables at your hotel on the mainland. A speedboat tour is no place for a passport, and a day bag with spare cash is enough. If you stay overnight, pack in a soft bag that a porter or longtail driver can handle, and keep a change of dry clothes in a sealed bag in case spray soaks the rest. Bring a charged power bank, because you will use your phone for tickets, maps and photos all day.

On the boat, ask about life jackets and where to sit. Seas can be choppy between Phuket and the islands, and travelers prone to seasickness do better in the middle of the boat. If you take medication for motion sickness, take it before you leave the pier, not when you feel unwell. Check that your travel insurance covers boat trips and snorkeling, and keep your policy number on your phone.

Alternatives if Phi Phi is full, closed or too rough

Plans change with the weather and the closure calendar. If Maya Bay is closed or the sea is too rough for the crossing, you have good alternatives on the Krabi side. Railay has cliff-backed beaches and viewpoints and is a short boat ride from Ao Nang, even when the open sea is uncomfortable. The longtail routes to its beaches run in many conditions, and a day there needs no long crossing.

For snorkeling in calmer water, Krabi Province has island-hopping trips that stay closer to the coast, and the Phang-Nga Bay area to the north has sheltered limestone scenery. If you want a slower island with fewer crowds, Ko Lanta is the usual choice in the high season, though its ferries thin out in the rainy months. Ask your operator what they offer when a route is cancelled, and choose a refundable booking if your dates are fixed.

Perguntas frequentes

Can you visit Ko Phi Phi as a day trip from Phuket?

Yes. Ferries take roughly two hours each way, and speedboat tours do the trip faster and add Maya Bay and snorkeling stops. A ferry day trip leaves little time on the island, so a speedboat tour or one night suits most travelers better.

Is it better to do Ko Phi Phi as a day trip or stay overnight?

Stay overnight if you can. The beaches and the viewpoint are far quieter at dawn and in the evening, after the day boats have left, and an overnight stay costs little more than a long tour.

Can you swim at Maya Bay?

Swimming in the bay itself has been restricted since the reopening, and boats land at a back-side pier. Rules and closure dates change, so check the national park authority and your boat operator before you book.

How long does the ferry to Ko Phi Phi take?

From Phuket or Krabi, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours in good weather. Speedboat tours can be quicker, and sailings are fewer and more often cancelled from about June to October.

What time should you arrive on Ko Phi Phi?

Early morning on the first ferry, or the evening before, to see the beaches before the day boats arrive in late morning. A late-morning arrival means sharing the island with the busiest hours.

Do you need to book Phi Phi boats in advance?

Usually a day or two ahead is enough, but book earlier around Christmas, New Year and other busy weeks. In the rainy season, keep dates flexible because boats can be cancelled.
