Sergels torg is a modern public square in central Stockholm, known for its black-and-white triangular paving and the illuminated glass obelisk Kristallvertikalaccent. A fountain sits at the center, while shops and cultural venues line the surrounding streets. Come in daylight to see the square’s layout and street life, then return after dark when the obelisk is often lit in colour. Drottninggatan, a major shopping street, begins nearby, and Kulturhuset has cultural events and exhibitions below the square.

A square on two levels

Sergels torg was built in the 1960s as part of a major redevelopment of central Stockholm. Its layout has two levels: an upper pedestrian space and a lower area for traffic. The distinctive black-and-white triangles in the paving have made the lower plaza, known as Plattan, a familiar city landmark.

The square takes its name from Johan Tobias Sergel, an 18th-century sculptor. It also serves as a meeting point and a place for public gatherings and demonstrations.

At the center of the fountain is Kristallvertikalaccent, a glass obelisk designed by Edvin Öhrström. Its lighting makes it especially noticeable in the evening, when the structure is often illuminated in colour.

Kulturhuset, a large cultural centre beside the square, has events, exhibitions and performances. There is also an underground shopping centre beneath the square. Nearby, Drottninggatan is a major shopping street, so Sergels torg works well as a starting point for exploring central Stockholm on foot.
