The former Gran Hotel

CaixaForum Palma

CaixaForum Palma occupies the former Gran Hotel, a building associated with Palma’s modernist architecture. Catalan architect Lluís Domènech y Montaner designed it, and it was built between 1901 and 1903. The interior has details worth noticing as you move between exhibitions, including its staircase and corridors.

The building was recovered by Fundació La Caixa in 1987 after suffering damage during the Civil War and dictatorship. Today, its historic rooms house a cultural programme alongside exhibition spaces.

The programme changes, with exhibitions across painting, sculpture, photography and multimedia. Past displays have included a presentation of Spanish artists Zuloaga and Anglada-Camarasa, and an exhibition about the human image, identity and symbolism across time and cultures. Check the current programme to see what is on during your visit.

A permanent display explores the history of comics in Spain. It includes original sketches from well-known graphic novels. Digital tools are also available for engaging with books and artworks, and some activities invite visitors to create and scan a portrait.

More than exhibition rooms

The center also has a library, a video library and a newspaper archive. A café and restaurant are on site, so you can add a meal or coffee to a visit. The combination of exhibition spaces and the former hotel’s interiors gives you more to explore than the displays alone.
