The Temple of Debod is an ancient Egyptian monument in Cuartel de la Montaña Park, near Plaza de España in central Madrid.

The Temple of Debod is an ancient Egyptian monument in Cuartel de la Montaña Park, near Plaza de España in central Madrid. Built in the 2nd century BC and dedicated to Amun and Isis, it was given to Spain by Egypt in 1968 after Spanish help to preserve monuments threatened by the Aswan High Dam. Inside, you can see the small temple; outside, its hilltop setting looks towards the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral. Come before sunset to visit the interior, then stay for the changing light over the city.

An Egyptian temple in Madrid

The Temple of Debod dates to the 2nd century BC and was built in Egypt for King Adikhalamani. Its chapel was dedicated to Amun and Isis. The monument originally stood near Aswan, in southern Egypt, where construction of the Aswan High Dam threatened historic sites with flooding.

In 1968, Egypt gave the temple to Spain in recognition of Spanish efforts to help preserve monuments affected by the dam project. It was dismantled, transported to Madrid and reconstructed in Cuartel de la Montaña Park, near Plaza de España. The rebuilt temple keeps the same east-to-west orientation as its original site. It opened to the public in 1972.

Inside the temple

The interior is small, with ancient stonework and details that give a closer look at the monument than you get from the park paths. The temple’s original columns and architectural elements were reassembled in Madrid. A visit inside suits travelers interested in Egyptian history and architecture, though the compact space means the exterior and setting are a substantial part of the stop too.

Entry to the interior is free, and booking ahead is recommended. The temple closes before dark, so plan to go inside earlier in the day if sunset is part of your visit. The exterior remains visible from the surrounding grounds.

Views from the park

The temple sits on elevated ground in Cuartel de la Montaña Park, with views across western Madrid. From the gardens and viewpoint, you can see the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral; on clear days, the Sierra de Guadarrama is visible in the distance. The setting makes the site a popular place to watch the sun go down.

For a quieter visit, arrive early. If you want both the interior and the sunset, see the temple first, then find a place in the park as evening approaches. Crowds gather around dusk, so allow time to choose a spot and take in the view.
