Cala d'en Serra is a small cove in Sant Joan de Labritja, on Ibiza's north-east coast. Its sand-and-pebble shore sits below cliffs, with old fishermen's huts and clear water for swimming and snorkelling. Above the beach, an unfinished hotel has become an open-air canvas for local and international graffiti artists. The cove is a quiet stop for sea views, rock formations and unusual photographs. A small beach bar serves drinks and snacks.

The cove and its unfinished hotel

Cala d'en Serra lies on Ibiza's north-east coast, near Portinatx. The small shore mixes sand and pebbles, and cliffs enclose the cove. Old fishermen's huts stand by the water; boats often anchor offshore.

The unfinished hotel above the beach began construction in 1969, but work stopped after funding was lost. Its walls now carry graffiti by local and international artists. The building and the natural setting make this a distinctive place to explore and photograph, but the structure is unsafe in places. Collapsed floors leave holes, so take care if you approach the ruins.

Walking to the beach

A coastal route from Portinatx passes the Moscater lighthouse and Caló des Pouet on the way to the cove. One account puts the walk at about one to two hours each way, depending on pace and stops. The path is marked, though it can be confusing at the start; the final descent to the beach is steep, and the return climb is harder. Bring water and wear trainers or other sturdy shoes.

The access road has potholes, and parking still leaves a steep walk down to the shore. There is no mobile phone reception at the cove. A public phone is available, or you can walk uphill to find a signal. A small beach bar serves cold drinks and snacks.
