Outside Toledo’s old city walls, Hospital de Tavera is a 16th-century Renaissance complex that once served as a hospital and later as a school for orphan girls. Visits are guided, taking you through rooms that include the church, sacristy, library and preserved pharmacy. Look for works by El Greco, Ribera and Tintoretto, as well as the marble tomb of Cardinal Tavera. The collection and the building’s history make this a worthwhile stop if you want to see a quieter side of Toledo’s heritage.

A Renaissance hospital outside the old walls

Hospital de Tavera

Hospital de Tavera stands beyond Toledo’s old city walls, near the city’s northern gate. Built between 1541 and 1603 by order of Cardinal Tavera, it is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Architects Alonso de Covarrubias and Bartolomé Bustamante were involved in its design; the building is also noted as Covarrubias’s last work.

Its Renaissance architecture extends through the interiors as well as the exterior. The complex includes columned courtyards and a church, and its rooms hold historic furnishings, tapestries and art. The building served as a hospital for centuries and later as a school for orphan girls. Cardinal Tavera was buried here, in a large marble sepulchre by Berruguete.

The collection includes works associated with El Greco, Ribera and Tintoretto, along with pieces by Titian. Among the El Greco works are Sagrada Familia con Santa Ana and El Bautismo de Cristo. His portrait of Cardinal Tavera and a small sculpture of the resurrected Christ are also part of the collection. A sculpture by El Greco is in the church sacristy.

The pharmacy is one of the complex’s most distinctive rooms. It has been preserved with medical objects from the hospital’s history, giving the visit a focus beyond paintings and architecture. The rooms also contain historic furniture and tapestries. The library and the hospital and family archives are additional parts of the collection, though access to rooms takes place as part of the guided visit.

How the guided visit works

You cannot explore the complex independently; entry is with a guide. Tours start every hour and take in the church, sacristy, pharmacy, library and other rooms. Guides provide historical context for the building and its collection. English-language tours are available on weekends, while weekday tours may be conducted in Spanish; check the schedule for the language you need before setting out.

Allow about an hour for the tour. If you want a quieter visit, weekday tours at 10 or 11 are suggested as a good time to go. The site is closed on Mondays. Advance ticket arrangements are recommended, and the foundation’s website is listed for visitor information.
