Roque Bentayga

Roque Bentayga is a volcanic rock formation in Gran Canaria’s Tejeda highlands, near the village of Tejeda.

Roque Bentayga is a volcanic rock formation in Gran Canaria’s Tejeda highlands, near the village of Tejeda. A short, steep trail climbs toward the almogarén, a ceremonial site used by the island’s Indigenous people. From the route, you can look across the Tejeda ravine toward Roque Nublo and, on clear days, the sea. Stop at the free information centre first for exhibits on the island’s pre-Hispanic history, including English-language videos.

A volcanic landmark in the Tejeda highlands

Roque Bentayga rises from the volcanic caldera of Tejeda, in the centre of Gran Canaria. Together with Roque Nublo, it is one of the island’s defining rock formations. The surrounding highlands have a network of hiking routes, and the rock is a natural and archaeological site.

The drive through the highlands is part of the approach. The formation stands above Tejeda, and views of the ravine and neighbouring peaks open up as you get closer.

The trail and the almogarén

A short, steep path climbs toward the almogarén, a ceremonial space associated with the island’s Indigenous people. Roque Bentayga also served as a natural fortress. Granaries and funerary caves are part of the archaeological remains described at the site, along with rock inscriptions and wall paintings.

The route has narrow walkways and rocky ground, so take care on the ascent. The views extend across the Tejeda ravine toward Roque Nublo and the sea when visibility is clear.

Start at the information centre

The free information centre introduces the history of the site and the island’s first inhabitants. English-language videos are available. Visiting before the walk gives context for the archaeological remains and the ceremonial space above.

The centre is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. If you plan to use its facilities, check that your visit falls within those hours.
