Jardín de la Marquesa is a botanical garden in Arucas, on Gran Canaria, with more than 500 plant species, including tropical and subtropical varieties. Gravel paths wind past palms, cacti, ponds and a gazebo, while peacocks roam among the greenery and tortoises can be seen in the garden. It is a quiet stop for a short nature walk. The former summer house stands within the grounds but is not open to visitors. Allow around 30 to 40 minutes to explore, and wear sturdy shoes for the uneven paths.

A botanical collection in Arucas

Jardín de la Marquesa is a privately managed botanical garden on the outskirts of Arucas, at the foot of Montaña de Arucas. The garden began taking shape in 1880, when the Marquis of Arucas started collecting plants during his travels. Its collection includes species from the Canary Islands and plants brought from elsewhere, with more than 500 species represented.

The grounds cover about 5,000 square metres and are arranged as a series of garden spaces. Tropical and subtropical plants grow alongside palms, cacti and mature trees, including century-old dragon trees. The mix of plant varieties gives the compact grounds plenty to look at during a short walk.

Paths, ponds and wildlife

Small gravel paths lead through the garden past ponds, a gazebo and planted areas. Peacocks wander freely across the grounds, and tortoises are also part of the garden’s wildlife. Observation areas give you places to pause among the plants.

The garden has a more informal feel in some sections, and parts of the grounds may appear less maintained than others. Wear shoes suited to gravel and uneven walking surfaces. A map is provided after you pay for entry, which can help you follow the paths.

The house and practical details

A mansion stands within the garden and was once the aristocratic family’s summer home. The house itself is not open to visitors, so plan your visit around the grounds and plant collection.

There are restrooms on site, and the entrance, restroom and parking are listed as wheelchair accessible. Tickets in advance are recommended. Admission is paid in cash at the garden, so bring cash with you.
