The hermitage dates to the 16th century and was among the early religious buildings in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. After pirates destroyed it, the chapel was rebuilt. Its history is also tied to the city’s sailors’ guild, giving the site a place in the story of local maritime life.

From the street, the building looks small and restrained. Inside, the decoration is more elaborate, with painted works, statues and an ornate altar.

The baroque altarpiece draws the eye with gold leaf and carved wooden details. The chapel also houses the image of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias. Take time to look over the paintings and statues, and keep the quiet setting in mind while other people are praying.

The hermitage stands beside Parque de San Telmo, so you can add a park walk to your visit. Access may be limited around Mass, so check when the chapel is open before setting out.
