Cascada del Parc de la Ciutadella is an ornate fountain in Parc de la Ciutadella, in Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella. Its stone carvings include clams and dragons, while a gilded figure of Aurora rides above the fountain in a four-horse chariot. Josep Fontserè led the design, and Antoni Gaudí contributed as a student by working on the water tank and hydraulics. Entry is free, so you can see the monument as part of a walk through the park’s gardens and around its lake.

Fontserè’s fountain and Gaudí’s contribution

The Cascada Monumental stands in Parc de la Ciutadella, where Josep Fontserè led the work with more than ten Catalan artists. Antoni Gaudí contributed while still a student. His work included the water tank and hydraulics, as well as stone medallions with reptile reliefs.

The fountain’s water display is framed by carved stone details, including clams and dragons. At the top, a gold-toned sculpture depicts Aurora, the Roman figure associated with dawn, riding a chariot drawn by four horses.

A stop in Parc de la Ciutadella

The fountain is in the northern part of Parc de la Ciutadella, one of Barcelona’s largest parks. Gardens, other fountains and a lake make it easy to include in a longer walk or a pause on a bench or the grass. The park also has a boat experience on the water.

Entry to the fountain is free. If you visit early, the park is quieter. Follow notices asking people not to feed the geese, and keep your belongings secure in busy areas.
