Casa Comalat is a Modernisme landmark at Avinguda Diagonal 442 in Barcelona’s Eixample, designed by Salvador Valeri i Pupurull and completed in 1911. Its two façades are markedly different: the Diagonal side is faced with Montjuïc stone and sculpted, flowing forms, while the Carrer de Còrsega side is covered in colorful mosaics by Lluís Bru i Salelles. Look closely at the carved wooden entrance and its cut glass. The interior is not generally open to visitors, so plan to admire the building from the street and respect the privacy of its occupants.
Two façades, two different designs
Casa Comalat stands at Avinguda Diagonal 442 in the Eixample district. Salvador Valeri i Pupurull designed the building, completed in 1911. Its exterior is unusual for the clear contrast between the two sides, so walk around the block rather than viewing only the Diagonal entrance.
The main façade uses Montjuïc stone and a dense pattern of undulating forms. Between the main and first floors, a central tribune sits on a fan-shaped support with sculpted floral decoration. Above it, a dome and pinnacle rise to a shield bearing a dove with an olive branch.
The mosaic side on Carrer de Còrsega
The rear façade has a different character, with extensive colored mosaics by Lluís Bru i Salelles. Seeing both sides gives a fuller sense of the building’s design. The carved wooden entrance on the Diagonal side is another detail to examine, with extensive cut glass incorporated into the door.
Interior access and courtesy
The interior combines Catalan Modernisme with Rococo-inspired gilded decoration. Its details include fresco painting, gilded stucco and glazed ceramic sconces. Dark mahogany frames the doors and windows; the vestibule has mahogany wainscoting and a built-in bench.
Casa Comalat is not generally open for casual visits. An appointment with one of the businesses inside may offer a chance to see more, but do not assume entry is permitted. The building is privately occupied, so admire the interior only with permission and keep noise to a minimum.
