Monasterio de la Cartuja

Monasterio de la Cartuja, on the outskirts of Granada’s Old Town, is a former Carthusian monastery and one of the city’s notable Baroque sights.

Monasterio de la Cartuja, on the outskirts of Granada’s Old Town, is a former Carthusian monastery and one of the city’s notable Baroque sights. Its plain exterior gives way to richly decorated interiors, especially the church, where coloured marble, paintings and a lavish tabernacle draw the eye. The monastery’s rooms trace a history that spans several centuries. An audio guide adds context as you explore; consider pairing your visit with other churches and monasteries in Granada.

A monastery built over centuries

The Royal Monastery of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de la Cartuja was home to a community of Carthusian monks. Construction began in the early sixteenth century and continued for almost three centuries, leaving the complex with a mix of architectural styles. The monks remained here until the exclaustration of 1835.

The monastery was built on the site of an old Arab villa called Aynadamar. Its long building history is reflected in the variety of styles across the complex, though the Baroque interiors are its defining feature.

The church and its Baroque interior

The church is the main place to focus your visit. Coloured marble, jasper and porphyry bring strong colour to the interior, alongside paintings by Juan Sánchez Cotán. The sanctuary is especially ornate: religious figures surround the space, and the tabernacle is made of marble.

The contrast between the plain, greyish outer walls and the lavish decoration inside makes the transition into the church particularly striking. Take time to look across the surfaces and paintings rather than treating the interior as a single view.

Exploring the rooms

The monastery’s rooms give the church a wider historical setting, with religious art and decoration throughout the complex. An audio guide provides information as you move between spaces. The monastery is on Granada’s outskirts, beyond the Old Town, and can be reached by bus or taxi.

If you are planning to visit several religious sites in the city, consider checking whether a package ticket covers more than one church or monastery. A quieter visiting time can also give you more room to appreciate the stillness of the complex.
