Tarbat Discovery Centre is a museum of Pictish and early Christian history inside the former Parish Church of St Colman in Portmahomack, on the Tarbat Peninsula near Tain. Carved Pictish stones and archaeological finds tell the story of a community whose monastery produced illuminated manuscripts. Look for the displays on manuscript-making, including reproductions of vellum illuminations, and visit the crypt beneath the church. A short film covers local history, and the centre’s location makes it a useful starting point for exploring nearby Pictish sites.

The Tarbat Discovery Centre occupies the ancient Parish Church of St Colman in Portmahomack. The church stands on a site where archaeological investigation uncovered evidence of a Pictish monastery and the production of illuminated manuscripts.

The displays bring together carved Pictish stones and archaeological finds from the area. A discovery beneath the church includes an archaeological dog. The crypt is part of the visit, adding an opportunity to see the site below the church as well as its exhibition spaces.

The centre explores Scottish history from Mesolithic times and explains the Picts’ connection to illuminated manuscript-making. Its displays include reproductions of vellum illuminations and material relating to the Book of Kells. The manuscript exhibits place local archaeological evidence within the story of early Christian culture.

A film in a small upstairs cinema room covers local history. Volunteers can share stories about Tarbat and direct visitors to other Pictish standing stones in the area. The gift shop has work by local artists, including Pictish-inspired silver jewellery.
