The centre traces Robert Burns’s life in Dumfries, where he spent his later years. Its setting is a restored 18th-century watermill on the west bank of the River Nith, the river that also inspired the poet.

The museum is free to enter. Staff can give you a personal introduction to the collection, which includes Burns’s writings and possessions, before you continue independently.

Interactive displays bring Burns’s work into the visit: you can choose songs on a screen and listen through headphones, and poems are read aloud. A model of Dumfries as it appeared in Burns’s time lets you navigate historic buildings digitally and learn about them before looking for them around town.

The centre also has a Lego trail. Outside, a riverside playground includes a willow sculpture of a Belted Galloway cow, a useful stop for families with children.

Film theatre and nearby sites

The film theatre screens independent cinema, foreign-language and arthouse films, documentaries, live events and classic films. Baby-friendly screenings are available; the auditorium has space to park a pushchair and comfortable seating. For a long screening, ask staff about the heating if the room feels too warm.

Bonnie’s Bistro is upstairs and has a terrace overlooking the river. To extend a Burns-focused visit, continue to his house and mausoleum, both nearby.
