Dundee Law

Dundee Law is the highest point in Dundee, rising about 175 metres above sea level. Its summit gives a 360-degree view across the city, the River Tay and the surrounding area. On clear days, the view can extend up to 45 miles, taking in Fife, Perthshire and the Sidlaw Hills.

An orientation table at the top helps you identify what you can see. Look towards the Tay estuary for the Tay Rail Bridge and the docks, where oil platforms have waited for repair or decommissioning. The city’s landmarks are also visible from above. On misty days, the view can change as haar, a coastal fog, moves across the bridge and river.

A hill with a long history

Dundee Law

Volcanic activity formed the hill around 400 million years ago. The name Law refers to a hill, and the summit’s prominent position has made it a distinctive feature of Dundee’s skyline.

The site has a much longer human history too. Archaeological finds include prehistoric burials dated to about 1500 BC, and the hill was used as an Iron Age hillfort. These traces place the Law’s past well before the modern city grew around it.

The memorial and ways up

A war memorial stands at the summit, commemorating those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. The site is also used for walking, running and quiet reflection. Take time at the memorial, and treat it as a place of remembrance.

You can reach the top on foot or by car. The climb is steep in places, and one route described from City Square covers 5.25 kilometres and includes stairs. If you prefer not to walk uphill, the road reaches the viewpoint. Free parking is available at both ends of the hill.
