Crail’s seafaring and town life

The museum looks at Crail as an ancient Royal Burgh and a fishing town in the East Neuk of Fife. Its collections include records, photographs, artefacts and memories connected with the town and the surrounding communities. Displays trace the local seafaring tradition and the history of commercial fishing, including the harbour’s catches of crab and lobster.

Crail’s harbour also has a story of trade and construction. The original harbour had one pier, which sheltered vessels from easterly gales. A second pier was built at the start of the 19th century by Robert Stevenson, grandfather of novelist Robert Louis Stevenson. The museum’s local focus helps put these details alongside the lives and work of the town’s residents.

Golf and the airfield

Crail’s golfing history is part of the story too. The Crail Golfing Society was founded in 1786 and is described as the world’s seventh-oldest golf society. Displays also cover local sporting traditions, including the names of older golf clubs such as the niblick and mashie.

The airfield section follows its history from the First World War to its closure in 1960. It covers its time as HMS Jackdaw, a Fleet Air Arm station, HMS Bruce Boys Training School and the Joint Services School for Linguists. Other displays explore Crail’s kirk, military history and community groups. Special exhibitions change regularly, so a return visit may bring a different subject into view.
