Bruichladdich was built in 1881 on the shore of Loch Indaal, on the Rhinns of Islay. The Harvey brothers founded it, combining the experience of a Glasgow whisky family with their own roles in designing, engineering and financing the distillery.

The distillery closed in 1994 and reopened under new ownership in 2001. Its production still uses traditional equipment, including an old open mash tun. The site is known for keeping traditional methods in use while developing a broad range of whiskies and gin.

The distillery makes whisky under three names: Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte and Octomore. Bruichladdich includes unpeated expressions, while Port Charlotte is heavily peated. Octomore is known for its particularly high peat levels.

The Botanist is the distillery’s gin, made with local herbs. Tours and tastings can introduce you to both the whisky and gin, and cocktail-making experiences focus on using the gin.

Tours and warehouse tastings

A guided tour covers the distillery and its whisky-making process, with guides explaining the site’s history and production. Some experiences include a tasting in a warehouse, where samples are drawn straight from the cask. A reported session included three cask whiskies, but tasting selections can differ.

The distillery also runs cocktail-making experiences. These combine a look at the gin-making process with time to prepare cocktails. Check the distillery’s website for current tour and experience options before planning your visit.
