Bonawe Iron Furnace was built in 1753 by an iron-smelting company from Cumbria. The surrounding supply of birch and oak made the location suitable for producing charcoal, the fuel needed to smelt iron. Workers coppiced the trees, cutting them in a way that allowed new growth to develop.

The works produced pig iron in a charcoal-fired blast furnace. Its buildings formed part of a larger industrial complex, connected to the harbour and the surrounding forests. The site gives a sense of how iron production depended on both the furnace and the resources around it.

The complex sits on a green hillside at Taynuilt, with its old buildings arranged across the grounds. Information panels explain the purpose of the structures and provide background on the iron industry. A guide may also give an introduction and suggestions for viewing the site.

Restoration work has closed some structures at times, so a guidebook can help make sense of the site if access is restricted. The grounds and the main furnace area have been accessible even when buildings were fenced off. Check the entrance carefully: map directions have led some visitors to the top of the site rather than to the ticket office and small car park below.
