Its programme brings together contemporary art, cinema, theatre, concerts and community events, with a café-bar and shop in the same building. An Lanntair

An Lanntair is a multi-arts centre on Kenneth Street in Stornoway, close to the ferry terminal. Its name means “the lantern” in Gaelic. The purpose-built centre opened in 2015 and brings visual art, film and live performance together under one roof.

The building includes a contemporary art gallery, cinema, theatre and concert hall, as well as a café-bar and shop. The galleries are free to visit. You can come for an exhibition, a screening or a performance, or combine a gallery visit with a stop for food or a browse in the shop.

The programme includes contemporary art exhibitions, films, theatre and live music, alongside Gaelic song and community workshops. Events also range from pantomimes to comedy and folk music. As the schedule changes through the year, check An Lanntair’s website for current exhibitions, screenings and performances before you plan a visit.

Stornoway’s cultural calendar includes events such as HebCelt, a music festival held in July, and The Mòd, which celebrates Scottish Gaelic poetry, music, song, arts and culture. An Lanntair hosts events throughout the year; check its programme for what is taking place during your stay.

The café-bar and shop

The café-bar looks out towards the harbour and serves food and drinks. Its menu has included light lunches, meals, coffee, cake and alcoholic drinks; past offerings have included soup with bread, burgers, fish and chips, pasta and sea-salt-and-paprika chips. Evening dining has also included Thai food, so check the current menu and service details if you are visiting for a meal.

The shop sells artwork and locally made items. Some artwork is displayed upstairs near the café seating, where people at tables can obstruct the view. If seeing the art is your priority, take that layout into account when choosing where to spend your time.
