Collective Gallery is a contemporary art centre in the former City Observatory buildings on Calton Hill, Edinburgh. Its exhibitions focus on new work by emerging artists, with displays that invite you to look closely and think about what you see. The restored observatory setting also brings local history and astronomy into the visit, including a 19th-century transit telescope. Step outside for wide views across the city, then pause at the café or browse the small shop for art and astronomy-related items.
From Cockburn Street to Calton Hill

Collective was established in 1984 as the Artist’s Collective Gallery. It occupied a space on Cockburn Street until 2013, when it moved to Calton Hill. Its new home brings the gallery into the former City Observatory and City Dome buildings, with an additional purpose-built exhibition space.
The current site opened in November 2018. The restored observatory buildings now hold exhibitions and other spaces for contemporary art.
Art and astronomy in the observatory

The gallery supports artists developing new work, and its exhibitions do not follow a permanent collection of Scottish art. Displays change, so the work on view depends on the exhibition programme. Some installations are designed to prompt questions about what the artist is communicating.
The City Dome is one of the exhibition spaces. The site also brings astronomy into the visit: a 19th-century transit telescope is displayed up close, and the shop carries astronomy-related merchandise.
The grounds and visitor facilities
Collective’s buildings sit among Calton Hill’s monuments, with open views over Edinburgh. The grounds include The Hillside, a creative space in an excavated section of hillside that supports emerging artists.
A café and a small coffee stand at the entrance provide places to stop for refreshments. The gallery also has a shop and library. The setting can give you a sheltered pause while exploring the hill, though reaching it involves an uphill walk.
