St. Isaac's Cathedral

St.

St. Isaac’s Cathedral rises above St. Isaac’s Square in central St Petersburg, its gilded dome visible across much of the city. Built between 1818 and 1858 to designs by Auguste de Montferrand, it is both a major Orthodox landmark and a museum. Inside, look for mosaics, frescoes, stained glass, malachite and lapis lazuli columns, and the monumental doors. A climb to the colonnade around the dome adds a panoramic view over the city, making the visit as much about the skyline as the interior.

A fourth design for the same site

The cathedral on St. Isaac’s Square is the fourth church built on this site. An earlier wooden church was dedicated to Isaac of Dalmatia, the patron saint of Peter the Great. The present building was commissioned in the early 19th century and designed by Auguste de Montferrand, a French-born architect.

Construction began in 1818 and was completed in 1858. The long project involved extensive work to strengthen the foundations on the site’s unstable ground. The finished cathedral became one of the most prominent buildings in St Petersburg, with its gilded dome visible from many parts of the city centre.

The exterior is defined by its neoclassical design, broad facade and imposing granite columns. Each of the large entrance columns was carved from a single piece of granite. The dome rises above the surrounding low skyline and is crowned by a colonnade that visitors can reach by climbing stairs.

The building’s scale is striking from St. Isaac’s Square, but details become clearer as you approach: the heavy doors, the columns and the sculptural work across the facade. Its design differs from the colourful towers often associated with Russian Orthodox churches, with a monumental form influenced by classical architecture.

Inside the cathedral museum

The interior is lavishly decorated with mosaics, frescoes, paintings and stained glass. Look for the mosaic icons and the large stained-glass image of Christ in the altar window. Malachite and lapis lazuli columns add colour among the marble and other decorative materials, while the iconostasis and painted surfaces fill the interior with detail.

St. Isaac’s functions as a museum as well as a religious building. Displays cover the cathedral’s architectural designs and construction, including the earlier versions built on the same site. Services are also held on some occasions, so access to parts of the building can be arranged around them.

Climb to the colonnade

The upper colonnade encircles the dome and gives a broad view over St Petersburg’s historic centre. From above, the city’s low-rise skyline, prominent buildings and the Neva River come into view. The climb is by stairs, so allow for the ascent when planning your visit; the upper level is a separate part of the experience from the cathedral interior.

The view is especially appealing in warm evening light, when the dome and surrounding city take on a golden tone. Tickets in advance can help avoid the entrance ticket queue. Check ticket options before you go if you want to visit both the interior and the upper level.
