Moskovskiy, also called the House of Soviets, is a monumental Soviet-era building on Moskovskiy Prospekt in St Petersburg. Its broad square has fountains and flower beds, with other large buildings around it. In warm weather, families walk here and young people skateboard or meet friends; the fountains catch the light as water moves. Come to study the building’s architecture up close, then spend time in a part of the city with a modern, business-focused feel.

Construction began in 1936, and the building was completed in 1941. A group of architects worked on the project under the direction of N. A. Trotsky, with Ya. N. Lukin and M. A. Shepilevsky among them. The building is also known as the Palace of Soviets.

In September 1941, it became a defense center and an observation post for artillery command on the Leningrad Front. The front’s command was based there in 1944. Finishing work on the building continued until 1945.

A monument to V. I. Lenin was placed in front of the House of Soviets in 1970. Its installation had been part of the original 1936 project. The sculptor was M. K. Anikushin, and the architect was V. A. Kamensky.

For the 2006 G8 summit, floodlights and additional lighting were installed on the building. Color-light fountains were also added to Moskovskaya Square. The square’s fountains and flower beds draw people outdoors in warm weather.
