Inside the Moscow Kremlin, the Armoury Chamber traces Russia’s royal history through objects once kept for the court. Its collection includes state regalia, gold and silver work, ceremonial weapons, royal clothing, religious pieces and ornate carriages. Look for the Fabergé eggs and garments worn for coronations, alongside personal belongings of the Romanovs. The museum occupies a building designed by Konstantin Ton and completed in 1851. Reserve a timed ticket ahead, then allow time to move through the displays at an unhurried pace.

From royal workshop to museum

The Armoury began in 1511 under Vasily III as a place to make and store weapons, imperial arms and regalia for the royal court. Its work later extended to jewellery, icon frames and embroidery. Over time, the collection grew beyond objects made in the Kremlin’s workshops: it also included gifts presented by foreign embassies.

The museum is part of the Great Kremlin Palace complex. Its present building was designed by architect Konstantin Ton and completed in 1851. The collection brings together objects kept for centuries in the tsar’s treasury and the Patriarch’s Sacristy, preserving items associated with both court life and religious use.

The displays span from medieval times to the early 20th century. State regalia and ceremonial arms show the objects made for formal court occasions, while royal garments give a closer look at the clothing worn by rulers. The collection also includes religious artifacts, silver and gold work, and pieces by Russian, Eastern and European masters.

The carriages are among the collection’s large-scale objects. Set alongside jewellery and smaller pieces, they offer a different view of court craftsmanship. Look for the Fabergé eggs, coronation garments and personal belongings associated with the Romanovs. Together, these objects connect the public ceremony of the monarchy with the possessions kept by its members.

Planning your visit

The museum is inside the Moscow Kremlin, so check the Kremlin’s ticket arrangements when planning your visit. Timed tickets are recommended, and buying ahead is particularly useful during the high season from May through September. If you are also visiting the Kremlin, one travel account recommends arranging an Armoury time slot when buying your Kremlin ticket.

A free audio guide is available to help explain the collection as you move through the rooms. There is seating inside, and a restaurant is listed among the onsite amenities. Photography is not allowed in the museum. Begin early if you want time to explore without rushing, and bring water or a snack for a longer visit.
