Praia Formosa

Praia Formosa is Funchal’s largest public beach area, on Madeira’s south coast west of the city centre.

Praia Formosa is Funchal’s largest public beach area, on Madeira’s south coast west of the city centre. Its shoreline combines dark volcanic sand with pebbles, and the beach is made up of four stretches: Praia Nova, Praia Formosa, Praia dos Namorados and Praia do Areeiro. Come for a swim, a seaside walk or the sunset over the water. There are public restrooms, showers, eateries and a promenade, but the rocky shore can make getting into the sea tricky.

Four stretches of shoreline

Praia Formosa

Praia Formosa is a beach area rather than one continuous stretch of the same sand. Its four sections are Praia Nova, Praia Formosa, Praia dos Namorados and Praia do Areeiro. The shoreline mixes volcanic sand with pebbles, and the amount of rock varies along the beach. Choose your spot with the water’s edge in mind if you plan to swim.
