During the Nazi occupation of Poland, the cemetery was destroyed. Tombstones were taken and used as paving stones in concentration camps, or sold. The surviving and restored stones offer a way to encounter the site’s history in the place where the cemetery stands.

The Remah Synagogue is beside the cemetery. Built around 1558, it is named for Rabbi Moses Isserles, known as the Remah, a Kraków local. It is one of two active synagogues in the city, with services each Friday evening.
