Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland is a geothermal park about 30 km south of Rotorua, on the route between Taupo and Rotorua. The name means sacred waters. Its steaming vents, bubbling mud pools and hot springs sit in ground sculpted by volcanic activity, and the pools range from orange-rimmed to neon green. The highlights are the Champagne Pool, the Devil's Bath and the Lady Knox Geyser, which erupts each morning. Marked walking tracks take you past all of them.

Where the name and the landscape come from

Waiotapu means sacred waters, and the park is one of the most colorful geothermal areas in New Zealand. Its features formed over thousands of years of volcanic activity. Iron in the soil gives much of the ground its orange tone.

The park also has the largest mud pool in New Zealand, and bubbling mud pools and steaming vents are spread along the walks.

The Champagne Pool is about 65 metres wide, with an orange rim and a bright green center. It takes its name from the constant bubbles that rise to the surface.

The Devil's Bath is lemon-lime to neon green. Artist's Palette is another colorful feature on the walks.

Lady Knox Geyser

The geyser is just outside the main gate, and it needs a separate ticket. It erupts around 10:15 am daily and reaches up to 20 metres for about an hour. A little soap added to the water sets off the eruption.

Visitors watch from benches in an amphitheatre around the geyser. A guide explains how the timing is achieved. Arrive by about 9:45 am to see it well.

Facilities and planning the walk

The main walks take about 75 minutes. All three main trails take around 3 hours. The entrance, restroom and parking lot are wheelchair accessible, and some pathways are too.

There is a restaurant and a cafe on site, a gift shop, restrooms and a playground, which suits families with young children.

Rain lowers the sulfur smell and makes the scene feel more surreal, but the paths get wet and slippery.
