Zuiderkerk

Zuiderkerk, or the Southern Church, is a 17th-century Protestant church at Zuiderkerkhof 72 in Amsterdam’s Nieuwmarkt area.

Zuiderkerk, or the Southern Church, is a 17th-century Protestant church at Zuiderkerkhof 72 in Amsterdam’s Nieuwmarkt area. Hendrick de Keyser designed its Dutch Renaissance form, and its tower is a familiar part of the city skyline. The church no longer holds regular services; it is used for cultural events and exhibitions. Look for the restrained Protestant interior and the organ associated with Christian Vater. Around noon, pause nearby to hear the bells, then explore the square and street art.

A church built for Protestant Amsterdam

Zuiderkerk was built between 1603 and 1611, after Amsterdam’s municipality decided to construct a church specifically for Protestant worship. Its name means Southern Church. Unlike a church designed for Catholic services, its interior followed Protestant preferences for a relatively restrained space.

Hendrick de Keyser designed the building. His work helped shape the church’s Dutch Renaissance character, with a tower that became part of Amsterdam’s skyline. The tower was added after the main building, in 1614. De Keyser was later buried in the church, in 1621.

Inside the church

The interior has a classic Dutch Protestant character. The organ built by Christian Vater is among its notable features. The church is no longer used for regular worship, and its current uses include concerts, exhibitions and other cultural events. The programme can include different kinds of events, so check what is scheduled if you want to go inside for a particular reason.

Exhibitions have also focused on Amsterdam’s urban development, including a permanent display with a scale model of the city. The church has hosted projected shows on its walls as well. These are event-based experiences, not a guaranteed part of every visit.

The tower and the Nieuwmarkt setting

Zuiderkerk stands in the Nieuwmarkt area, within walking distance of popular Amsterdam sights. The tower is often associated with views over the city, canals and older houses, but access is not guaranteed. Information about climbing it differs, so confirm availability before making it the purpose of your visit.

The church square and nearby street art add reasons to pause outside. The bells are especially worth catching around noon. For another view of the tower, the Groenburgwal canal provides a perspective across the surrounding water and buildings. The nearby area also has places to eat, making the church easy to combine with a walk through this part of the city.
