The English Reformed Church stands inside Amsterdam’s Begijnhof, at Begijnhof 48, a short walk from Dam Square. This historic chapel has served the city’s English-speaking Protestant congregation since 1607, after the municipality transferred it to them. Step inside, when access allows, to see the church’s interior and organ, or attend an English-language service. The quiet courtyard setting offers a pause from the busy centre, and a visit to the church and its surroundings takes about 30 minutes.

From convent chapel to English-language church

The chapel was part of a Catholic convent in the Begijnhof, an enclosed community near Spui. In 1578, after the Dutch government adopted Calvinism, Amsterdam’s municipality took the chapel from the convent. The city later gave it to Amsterdam’s English-speaking Protestants in 1607.

The church’s weekly services have continued almost without interruption since then. Its congregation is affiliated with the Church of Scotland and the Protestant Church in the Netherlands.

Inside the church

The historic building remains a place of worship, as well as a place to pause and look around. Its interior includes an impressive organ. Access for a visit outside a service may be limited, so check the church website before making a special trip.

The church is at Begijnhof 48. Finding the entrance can be confusing: it is reached through a gate in the residential Begijnhof. The courtyard and church are close to the centre, but the enclosed setting feels removed from the surrounding streets.
