Dar Bellarj is an arts and cultural centre in Marrakech’s medina, beside Ben Youssef Madrasa. Its name means “stork” in Arabic, a reference to the building’s former use as a sanctuary for injured storks. Exhibitions and cultural programmes explore Moroccan life through media including photography, film and textiles, with workshops and concerts held as part of the programme. Displays have included photographs and videos of Marrakech’s empty streets during the pandemic, as well as artwork process studies in the basement. Entry is free; a donation can support the foundation’s work.
A former stork sanctuary in the medina

Dar Bellarj takes its name from the Arabic word for stork. The building was once used as a sanctuary for injured storks; today, the foundation works to promote living culture in Marrakech’s medina. Its location beside Ben Youssef Madrasa makes it easy to pair with a visit to the historic school.
The centre brings exhibitions and cultural activities together in a historic setting. Its programme includes concerts, workshops and meet-ups, alongside displays that use different media to explore Moroccan culture and traditions.
Exhibitions and cultural programmes

The exhibition programme changes over the year and has included film, photography and textiles. A photography and video display about the pandemic showed Marrakech’s streets emptied of people. Another exhibition in the basement focused on the process behind artworks.
Workshops and events offer another way to engage with the centre’s programme. Some are interactive and organised around particular cultural themes. Check the foundation’s website for what is on during your visit, as the exhibitions and activities change.
