Cross on the Gozo Channel ferry from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr, a crossing of about 25 minutes, and plan three stops: the Citadel in Victoria, the Ġgantija temples in Xagħra and one coastal stop. Fares are charged leaving Mġarr, so check your last sailing before lunch. Stay a night instead if you want the island without the ferry deadline.

Gozo as a day trip: the verdict
Gozo works as a day trip from Malta if you start early, choose three stops and know your last sailing before you sit down to lunch. The Gozo travel guide covers the island as a whole. The ferry crossing is short, so the real limit is the clock at Mġarr, not distance. If you are still building the wider trip, the Malta guide shows how Gozo fits with Valletta, Mdina and the temples.
A good day has a shape: the ferry in the morning, the Citadel in Victoria, a lunch in town, the Ġgantija temples in Xagħra in the afternoon and a return that leaves a buffer. A bad day tries to add a beach, a cliff walk and a second town, and ends with a rush to the harbor. The islands of Gozo and Comino together make a longer excursion, covered in Gozo and Comino; do not combine the Blue Lagoon with this route in one day.
Who should not do it as a day trip: travelers who want to swim and dive, anyone with limited mobility who needs slow transfers, and people arriving on a tight flight day. For those, an overnight is better, and where to stay in Gozo compares the bases. Everyone else can make a good day of it with the structure below.
The crossing: Ċirkewwa to Mġarr
The Gozo Channel ferry sails between Ċirkewwa on Malta and Mġarr on Gozo. The operator lists the crossing at about 25 minutes, the service as daily and the current schedule as running from 19 May 2025 to 8 November 2026. After the November date, check the operator's page for the new timetable, because the departure pattern may change. The Visit Malta ferry list gives the terminal phone numbers if you need to ask about a particular sailing.
Fares apply to trips leaving Mġarr, which means you pay on the way back, not on the way out. That matters for planning: you cannot buy a return at Ċirkewwa and be done, and you should have your payment method ready on Gozo. Children aged 3 to 12 pay a lower fare, and the operator says the child ticket can only be bought at the Gozo Channel booths in Mġarr and must be validated for embarkation. Children aged 0 to 2 travel free, with a complimentary ticket obtained from the terminal or booths.
The fare itself is on the operator's page. Look at the passenger fares page when you plan, and note any night fare for late departures. If you take a car, the operator has a separate car and driver fares page.
Getting to Ċirkewwa
Ċirkewwa is at the northern tip of Malta, so the first leg of the day is the bus, taxi or car ride to the terminal. From Sliema, St Julian's or Valletta, buses and taxis run north, and the Tallinja app shows routes and times. Bus fares and ticket rules are covered in getting around Gozo. Check the journey time on the app for your hotel and add a buffer, because it varies with traffic.
Start early. Ferries run daily, but a late start means fewer hours on Gozo and a harder last sailing. If you hire a car, drive on the left and plan parking at the terminal. If you have not set up your phone, an eSIM for Malta keeps the app and the timetable on screen. The northern Malta guide covers what to see on the Ċirkewwa side if you arrive early or leave late.
Three ways to do the day
There are three practical ways. The first is the public bus: cheap, flexible and good for one town and one temple, and the limit is the bus timetable on Gozo and the last ferry. The second is a guided tour, which bundles the ferry and island transport and removes the logistics, at the cost of fixed stops and less time at each. The third is a hire car, the most flexible for coast stops and a relaxed pace, with the cost of driving on the left, narrow village lanes and parking.
If the day is about the Citadel and Ġgantija, the bus is enough. If it is about the coast, as well as sights, a car or a tour makes sense. If you only have one day and do not want to manage a clock, take the tour and keep your energy for the sights. Getting around Gozo compares the options in more detail.

A bus-and-ferry route
This route needs no car. From Mġarr, take a bus or taxi to Victoria Bus Terminal, which serves the island's routes, and walk up to the Citadel. Heritage Malta's Ċittadella combo ticket covers sites including Gran Castello Historic House, an 18th-century group of houses, and the Old Prison, the oldest surviving prison in Gozo. An adult pays €5, youths and seniors €3.50 and children aged 6 to 11 €2.50. The Gozo Museum of Archaeology, also in the Citadel, has announced a renovation closure, so check which sites are open when you go.
Have lunch in Victoria, then take a bus or taxi to Xagħra for the Ġgantija Archaeological Park. The combined ticket with Ta' Kola Windmill is €10 for adults, €8 for youths and seniors and €6 for children aged 6 to 11. Heritage Malta says a visit normally takes about an hour, starting at an interpretation centre with audiovisuals and a display of Neolithic finds, then following an outdoor path to the temples. Add the windmill if you have time; it dates from 1787 and is one of the few surviving windmills from the Knights' period.
Return to Mġarr with a buffer of at least an hour before your planned sailing, and have your fare ready. Do not plan the Xagħra Circle on this route: Heritage Malta lists it as open by appointment only, for groups of up to 10 people on uneven terrain, and it is a separate booking.
If you have a car
A hire car lets you swap the bus legs for coast stops. After the Citadel and Ġgantija, the choices are the Ta' Pinu shrine, the dramatic coast around Dwejra, the cove at Xlendi and the bay at Marsalforn. Pick one, not three, because village lanes are narrow and parking takes time. Check opening arrangements for the shrine on its own site, and take a swim only on calm days. Gozo is small, but village lanes are narrow and parking takes time.
If you take your own car across, check the Gozo Channel car and driver fares and the vehicle rules on the operator's page. If you rent on Malta and want to take the car to Gozo, check your rental terms and renting a car abroad for excess and cover. Many visitors find it simpler to rent the car on Gozo or to use a tour for the day.
What to book ahead
A Gozo day needs little advance booking, which is its appeal. Check the ferry page for how to buy tickets on your date, and the Heritage Malta pages for the Citadel and Ġgantija. Book the Xagħra Circle only by appointment, and treat it as a separate visit. If the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is on your Malta list, Heritage Malta says Hypogeum tickets continue to be available at the Gozo Museum of Archaeology premises while the museum shop stays open. That is useful if you are on Gozo, but the Hypogeum itself is on Malta, so book a slot that fits your return.
If you prefer to buy tickets in advance for the Citadel or the temples, use the venue's own site or a clearly labeled reseller; official site or reseller explains the difference and why the official page is the safe default.
Day trip or overnight
Stay the night if you want the Citadel at opening, a swim, a cliff walk or a quiet evening. One night changes Gozo from a rush into a visit. Stay in Victoria if you want buses and sights, in Marsalforn or Xlendi for the sea, and in a village if you have a car. A day trip is the right choice if your Malta days are limited, if you are on a budget, or if you want Gozo as a sample before you decide whether to come back.
Another rule of thumb: if your route has more than three stops, you need an overnight. If it has one town, one temple and one meal, the day trip is fine. Where to stay in Gozo sets out four bases and who should skip each.
Backup plan for wind and rain
Sea conditions affect ferries, and you should check the Gozo Channel page the morning you travel. If the weather is poor, keep the plan indoors: the Citadel sites are covered, and the temple visit can be shortened. If sailings are disrupted, a buffer in your plan matters more than anything else, and flexible tickets for the onward journey help.
The simplest rule is to book your return plans loosely. Do not tie the evening to a flight, a restaurant booking or a show on Malta. A late afternoon sailing leaves room for delay without ruining the night. If you cannot avoid a tight return, stay over instead.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is assuming the fare is paid on the way over; it is charged on the return from Mġarr. The second is trying to see Ġgantija, a beach and a cliff walk in one afternoon. The third is leaving the Citadel for last, when the sites close earlier than the evening light suggests. Check the Heritage Malta hours for your date, and remember that last admission is 30 minutes before closing.
The last is skipping the buffer. A comfortable plan returns to Mġarr an hour before the sailing, not ten minutes. Before you go, travel insurance covers cancellations if a ferry day goes wrong, and getting around Europe is the place to compare the rest of your connections.
