Use the bus from Victoria Bus Terminal if you base yourself in Victoria or Marsalforn and stick to the main sights. Hire a car for farmhouse stays, Xlendi and a flexible coast day, and drive on the left. Take a guided tour if you have one day and want no logistics. Taxis fill the gaps, and the last ferry sets the end of the day.

Getting around Gozo: the short answer
For most visitors, the best way around Gozo is the bus if you sleep in Victoria or Marsalforn, a hire car if you sleep in a village or at Xlendi, and a guided tour if you only have one day. Taxis fill the gaps in every plan. The Gozo travel guide covers what to see, and where to stay in Gozo covers where to sleep. For the wider trip, the Malta guide shows how Gozo fits with the main island.
Gozo is small, but it is not a place where you can hop between sights at will. The main attractions are spread across the island, the lanes between villages are narrow, and the ferry timetable sets the end of the day if you are on a day trip. The most useful choice is whether you want to manage a timetable or manage a car. Everything else follows from that.
If you want one rule: no car means Victoria as your base, and a car means you can sleep anywhere. Decide that first, then book the bed.
The bus
Buses on Gozo leave from Victoria Bus Terminal, which Malta Public Transport lists as serving its Gozo operations. That makes Victoria the hub of any bus-based trip, and it is the reason the town is the practical base. The operator's tallinja app shows journey planning, real-time updates and service alerts, so download it before you travel and check the Gozo routes you plan to use.
Fares are simple. The operator lists single cash fares of €2.00 on day routes in winter and €2.50 in summer, and €3.00 on night routes. A ticket is valid for two hours with free transfers inside that window, and you can pay with cash, a contactless bank card or a smartphone at boarding. A 12 single-day-journeys card costs €19.00, is valid for six months from first use and can be shared among travelers, which is worth a look if you plan many rides. The operator can fine you €50 if you cannot show valid proof of travel, so keep your ticket or card handy.
Where the bus works well: Victoria and the Citadel, Marsalforn, the main villages and the sights that sit on the principal roads. Where it works less well: late evenings, remote coves and any plan that needs a tight schedule. Check the last departure on the app before you commit to dinner away from your base, and keep a taxi in mind as the fallback.
Hire car
A car makes Gozo easier in exchange for a few cautions. Traffic drives on the left, village lanes are narrow and parking near popular spots such as the cove at Xlendi is limited, so budget time at every stop. If you hold a license from outside the EU, read international driving permit to see whether you need one, and read renting a car abroad for excess, cover and what rental desks sell at the counter.
A car suits three kinds of trip. The first is a farmhouse or village stay in Xagħra or Nadur, where bus timetables are less useful in the evening. The second is a coast-and-cliff trip that includes Xlendi, Dwejra and the north coast. The third is a family with luggage and a flexible schedule. It suits fewer people on a one-day trip, where the ferry already takes the first and last hour and parking in Victoria eats the rest.
Think about where to collect the car. You can bring a rental over on the ferry; Gozo Channel publishes a car and driver fares page, and the schedule runs daily. But check the rental contract first, because some agreements restrict ferry use or insurance. Many visitors rent on Gozo for the days they need it and use the bus for the others, which avoids paying for a car that sits outside a hotel.

- Vantagem: Reach cliffs, coves and farmhouses freely

Taxis and tours
Taxis fill the gaps. They are useful for late arrivals at Mġarr, for luggage between the harbor and a village house and for short hops where the bus does not run. Agree the fare before you start or insist on the meter, and ask your hotel to book the return if you are heading somewhere remote. A taxi for a full day is a middle option between a bus and a car, and it removes the driving without fixing the timetable.
Guided tours bundle the ferry and island transport. They suit one-day visitors who want no logistics and a guide, and they work well in rain, when planning is hardest. The cost is fixed stops and less time at each, so check which sights are included and how long you get. Malta Public Transport also sells hop-on hop-off bus and Gozo high-speed add-ons to its Explore Flex travel cards, which can suit visitors who want sightseeing built into a transit card. Check the operator's page for what each add-on includes before you buy.
Sight by sight: what works with which option
Bus routes and frequencies change, so confirm each one on the Tallinja app before you plan around it. The Citadel in Victoria is a walk from the bus terminal, so it suits the bus or no transport at all. The paid sites there and the Ġgantija temples in Xagħra are priced in Gozo day trip from Malta. On transport alone, Ġgantija is reachable by bus from Victoria, and Heritage Malta lists parking at the site for those who arrive by car.
Marsalforn is on a bus route from Victoria and is easy by bus or taxi. Xlendi is also reachable by bus, but the cove sits in a valley, so the walk out is a climb. Ta' Pinu and Dwejra sit further out; they are easier with a car or a tour, and you should check the shrine's visiting arrangements on its own site. The Xagħra Circle is by appointment only, so it does not fit a bus-timetable day unless you book ahead.

Walking and cycling
Walking works in Victoria and the Citadel, along the promenades at Marsalforn and Xlendi and on coastal paths. It does not work between villages on a hot day: distances are longer than they look, shade is limited and some roads have little pavement. If you plan a cliff walk, carry water, wear shoes with grip and check the weather, because wind and sun are the main risks. Cycling is possible on quiet roads, but traffic and hills make it a keen cyclist's option rather than a default.
Sample plans
For one day by bus: ferry to Mġarr, bus to Victoria, the Citadel, lunch, bus to Xagħra for Ġgantija and back, with a buffer before the last sailing. For one day with a tour: book a day trip, choose one with Victoria and a coastal stop, and carry cash for lunch and tickets. See Gozo day trip from Malta for the full route.
For two days with a car: day one for the Citadel and Ġgantija, day two for Ta' Pinu, Dwejra and Xlendi, with a swim between. For three days mixed: day one by bus in Victoria and the Citadel, day two by car for the coast, day three by bus to Marsalforn for a sea day. Whatever you choose, decide the last ferry before you decide the last stop.
Night, weather and the ferry
Evenings are where a bus-only trip struggles, so check the last bus on the Tallinja app before dinner away from your base. For the ferry, remember that fares apply to trips leaving Mġarr, and that the operator lists a night fare for sailings after 8:00pm in the colder months. Heritage Malta's sites also stop admitting visitors 30 minutes before closing and close on some holidays, so check the hours for your date before you plan a late visit.
Wind and heat decide the rest. In July and August, plan the Citadel and the temples in the morning and the sea in the afternoon. In winter, daylight is short and some coastal restaurants keep reduced hours, so check before you rely on a particular one.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is booking a village farmhouse without a car and assuming the bus will cover dinner. The second is renting a car for a one-day visit, when the ferry and parking cost more time than they save. The third is skipping the rental terms and discovering at the harbor that the contract does not cover the ferry. The fourth is walking between villages in midsummer heat.
The last is planning the whole day around a last bus you have not checked. Open the app, look at the final departure for your return leg and the final ferry, and build the day backward from the earlier of the two. Before you go, an eSIM for Malta keeps the timetable on your screen, and travel insurance covers cancellations if a ferry or a flight changes the plan.
