Muzium Telekom occupies a neo-classical building completed in 1928. It first housed a manual telephone exchange, then became British Malaya’s first mechanical exchange in 1938. The building was threatened with demolition in the 1980s but was saved, and Malaysia’s National Archives later declared it a historic landmark.

The building’s original purpose connects directly to the museum’s subject. Its galleries trace communication in Malaysia from the 1870s to the present, with exhibits supplied by Telekom Malaysia.

The displays cover the tools and systems people used to send messages before modern telecommunications. Look for Morse code equipment, railway and marine communication devices, and ketuk-ketuk bamboo instruments. Together with the telephones on display, these objects show how communication methods changed over time.

The collection includes public and household phones from the 1970s onward, as well as examples of telephone designs from different periods. A large retro phone display is a distinctive stop for photographs.

Planning a visit

The museum uses interactive displays, including a model of Kuala Lumpur Tower. The collection is arranged across the building, with a digital gallery on an upper floor. The main displays can make for a compact visit, so allow extra time if you want to read the information closely.

A library on site is open to the public on weekdays for further reading about telecommunications. The museum is on Jalan Raja Chulan and is within walking distance of Masjid Jamek LRT Station. A purple GoKL City Bus route also goes directly to the museum.
