Inside, you can see figures of Senju Kannon and Kosodate Kannon, along with historical objects including a painting of the Battle of Ueno. Outside, the circular branches of the Moon Pine frame a view beyond the temple. Visit in the morning for a quieter look, and ask about collecting a goshuin stamp in a notebook.

Kiyomizu Kannon-dō was established in the early 1630s as part of the Kan’eiji temple complex. Its design takes inspiration from Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto. The temple moved to its present location in the late 17th century, overlooking Shinobazu Pond.

Kan’eiji’s grounds once covered Ueno Hill. The temple is one of several historic religious buildings in Ueno Park, alongside Kan’eiji and Ueno Toshogu Shrine.

The temple’s principal Buddhist image is Senju Kannon, the Thousand-Armed Goddess of Mercy. The building also houses Kosodate Kannon, associated with child-rearing. Inside, the dim space and old wood give the visit a distinct atmosphere.

Among the historical objects is a painting from 1878 depicting the Battle of Ueno. Photography is restricted inside, so take time to look at the interior rather than planning to photograph its contents.

The Moon Pine outside

The Moon Pine, also called Tsuki no Matsu, stands in front of the temple. Its branches grow into a circular shape, which gives the tree its name. From outside, the ring frames the view beyond it and makes a useful point to pause before leaving the temple grounds.

If you collect goshuin, the temple has stamps for a goshuinchō notebook. Bring one or ask about purchasing a notebook during your visit.
