Benten-dō stands on a small rise southeast of Senso-ji’s main hall. The hall is dedicated to Benzaiten, a deity associated with the arts, music and wisdom. Its position on Benten Hill sets it apart from the busier central grounds of Senso-ji.

The hall is counted among the Three Benten of the Kanto region, alongside sites in Enoshima and Fuse. Benzaiten is also known here as the Old Woman Benten, a name linked to her depiction with white hair.

The Time Bell

The Time Bell near the hall was made in 1692 on the orders of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. It once announced the time during the Edo period. Today, it is rung on New Year’s Eve.

The hill was once a place from which to look across the surrounding area. The hall and bell make a worthwhile pause while walking through Senso-ji’s grounds.

A quieter stop at Senso-ji

The area can draw people taking photographs, especially around the main hall. Arriving early or choosing a less busy time gives you more room for a quieter visit. Take care to respect the hall’s religious purpose: pause to reflect or make an offering rather than treating the grounds solely as a backdrop.

Cherry blossom season adds pink flowers beside the hill. Benches and a smoking area are nearby, making the spot a convenient place to rest during a walk around the temple.
