Atago Jinja is a Shinto shrine in Tokyo’s Minato City, set above the streets of Toranomon. Its steep stone staircase, known as the Steps of Success, gives the visit a memorable start; a gentler route is available for those who prefer to avoid the climb. At the top, see the torii gate, main shrine, koi pond and small garden. The shrine is a quiet place to pause among modern buildings, and you can request a hand-drawn goshuin if you bring your own stamp book.
The Steps of Success

Atago Jinja is known for the steep staircase leading up to its grounds. The steps are linked to a story about a young samurai who rode his horse up the slope and later found good fortune in battle. The story has made the staircase a symbol of success, and people come to pray for progress in their work and personal lives.
If the steep ascent is not for you, there is a gentler route around the side. An elevator is also noted at the side of the shrine.
A shrine above the city

The shrine was first built in 1603 and rebuilt in 1953. It stands 26 metres above sea level, with a small garden within its grounds. Modern buildings now obscure the view that was once visible from the site.
Look for the torii gate, the main shrine and the koi pond. The grounds provide a calm setting close to the busy streets and high-rises of Toranomon. A teahouse is also located at the top.
