Ryōan-ji is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple in northwest Kyoto, known for its dry landscape garden and broad grounds. In the Hojo Garden, 15 rocks sit among moss patches on white gravel, enclosed by low walls. Their arrangement has no confirmed explanation, so take time to look from the viewing platform and form your own impression. The temple grounds also include a water feature and trees, and there is a pure vegetarian restaurant on site. Visit early for a quieter look at the garden.

The arrangement in the Hojo Garden

The Hojo Garden is a dry landscape garden covering about 248 square metres. Fifteen rocks of different sizes sit in small groups on moss patches, surrounded by white gravel and enclosed by low earthen walls. Its spare design draws attention to the shapes, spacing and surfaces of the stones.

Try viewing the arrangement from different positions on the platform. At least one rock remains hidden from each viewpoint, so the scene changes as you shift your gaze. The garden’s creator, date of construction and intended meaning are unknown. Interpretations have included islands in a sea, tigers swimming and mountains above clouds, but none is established as the answer.

From villa to Zen temple

Ryōan-ji

Ryōan-ji began as an aristocratic residence and became a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple around 1450. The temple’s best-known garden is the Hojo rock garden, but the grounds extend beyond its enclosed viewing area, with trees and a water feature.

The temple is in northwest Kyoto, close to Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. Its grounds involve plenty of walking over uneven terrain, so comfortable shoes are useful. Shoes must be removed before entering the temple buildings.
