Mibu Temple is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, known for its ties to the Shinsengumi and for Mibu Kyogen, a form of traditional comic theatre. Its grounds have blossom trees, a small cemetery and memorials connected with the Shinsengumi. Come for a quiet walk, or plan around a kyogen performance and the Setsubun Festival, held here from February 2 to 4. Ask staff where to find the Isami Kondo monument and Goshuin stamps, then browse the shop for Shinsengumi-related souvenirs.

Mibu Temple

Mibu Temple was founded in 991 by the monk Kaiken. Its later association with the Shinsengumi gives the grounds a particular interest for visitors exploring that period of Japanese history. Memorials to members of the group are on the temple grounds, including a monument to Isami Kondo.

The temple remains a place of worship. Move quietly through the grounds and treat the cemetery and memorials with respect.

Mibu Temple

Mibu Temple is known as the birthplace of Mibu Kyogen, a form of traditional Japanese comic theatre. The annual Setsubun Festival takes place from February 2 to 4 and includes a performance of the kyogen play “Setsubun.” Stalls are also set up within the temple grounds during the festival.

Performance seating can be limited, and the stage is covered, so some seats have a less clear view. Arriving early gives you more time to find a place. A booklet explaining the stories is available in English.
