Sinagoga Levantina is a historic Sephardic synagogue in Venice’s Ghetto Vecchio, at Cl. Ghetto Vecchio 1154. Built for the city’s Levantine Jews, it has a modest exterior and a richly finished interior. Look for the carved walnut bimah and the arrangement that places the bimah and aron opposite each other across the hall. A guided visit or audio guide can help explain the synagogue’s history and architecture. It is one of two synagogues in the Ghetto Vecchio open to visitors.

The Levantine Jewish community

Sinagoga Levantina was built for Venice’s Levantine Jews, Sephardic merchants from the eastern Mediterranean under Ottoman rule. They were admitted to the Ghetto Vecchio after 1541. Although they lived within the city’s system of Jewish confinement, they maintained their own religious rite, institutions and social identity.

The synagogue gives that distinct community a lasting place in the Ghetto Vecchio. Its history offers a way to understand that Jewish life in Venice was not organised as a single, unified community: different groups kept their own traditions and institutions.

A purpose-built synagogue and its interior

Unlike most synagogues in the Ghetto, the Levantine synagogue was purpose-built. It was rebuilt on a larger scale in the 1680s. Its exterior is modest; inside, the room is richly and carefully finished.

The Sephardic arrangement is visible in the hall: the bimah and aron face one another across the space. The carved walnut bimah is a striking detail and helps convey the scale of the interior. Take time to look at how the two elements are positioned, as well as the woodwork around the bimah.

Planning a visit

The synagogue is open to visitors by guided or self-guided visit, and is one of two synagogues in the Ghetto Vecchio that can be visited. An English-language guided tour gives context on its history and architecture; an audio guide is another way to follow the visit. The synagogue is still functional.

Before entering, check that your belongings will pass the required security check. The entrance is wheelchair accessible. A winter visit may be quieter, according to the available visitor information.
