At the tip of Dorsoduro, where the Grand Canal meets the Giudecca Canal, Punta della Dogana pairs a former Venetian customs house with a contemporary art museum run by the Pinault Collection. Japanese architect Tadao Ando adapted the historic building into a gallery, where changing exhibitions sit within clean-lined spaces and the structure’s old brick and beams. Outside, the point opens onto views of St Mark’s Basin, the Doge’s Palace and San Giorgio Maggiore. You can visit for the art, the architecture or the waterfront outlook.

A customs house at the meeting of two canals

Punta della Dogana stands at Dorsoduro’s eastern tip, where the Grand Canal and Giudecca Canal meet. Its triangular outline points into the water, and the site gives a broad view across St Mark’s Basin toward the Doge’s Palace, the campanile and San Giorgio Maggiore.

The building began as the Dogana da Mar, Venice’s maritime customs house. It once monitored boats entering the Grand Canal and the goods they carried. Giuseppe Benoni designed the customs complex in the 17th century. Above it, two Atlas figures support a golden sphere topped by Fortune, a weather vane that turns with the wind.

After a long period of abandonment, the former customs house was adapted as an exhibition space by Japanese architect Tadao Ando. The restored building brings together its original structure, including brick, beams and substantial columns, with a restrained modern interior. Polished surfaces, clean lines and natural light give the galleries a different character from the historic exterior.

The building’s geometry shapes the visit. Its large rooms give contemporary works room to occupy the space, and the contrast between old construction and Ando’s minimalist approach is part of what makes the museum distinctive.

Contemporary art from the Pinault Collection

Punta della Dogana is one of two Venice venues for the Pinault Collection, alongside Palazzo Grassi. The museum presents temporary exhibitions, including monographic and group shows, with works by established and emerging contemporary artists. The displays change, so the work on view depends on your dates; check the current programme before planning around a particular artist or exhibition.

The scale and light of the galleries suit ambitious installations and sculpture. If you want to spend more time with the collection, a combined ticket can include Palazzo Grassi, which is also used for changing exhibitions.

Getting to the waterfront point

The museum is in Dorsoduro, behind the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute. You can reach the area on foot through the neighbourhood or take a vaporetto to the Salute stop. The waterfront promenade leads to the tip, where you can pause outside the museum and watch boat traffic at the junction of the canals.

The route along the fondamenta has little shade, which matters on hot days. Early morning or late afternoon brings softer light for the view across the water. The museum has step-free access features, including an accessible entrance, elevator and restroom.
