Palazzo del Cinema stands on Lungomare Guglielmo Marconi on Venice’s Lido, beside the beaches. Designed by Luigi Vietti and opened in 1937, it is the main venue for the Venice Film Festival. Its large auditorium and several screening rooms host films and festival events; the Sala Grande can seat more than 1,000 people. Look for the building’s high ceilings, frescoes, marble details and grand staircase, then attend a screening if one is on. Outside festival season, there are fewer activities to see inside.

Palazzo del Cinema is on Lungomare Guglielmo Marconi, beside the beaches of the Lido. The building opened on 10 August 1937 for the fifth edition of the Venice Film Festival. Designed by Italian architect Luigi Vietti, it has a modernist style.

The Venice Film Festival began in 1932. The Palazzo became its main venue, hosting screenings and key festival events, including the final award ceremony. During festival season, the area around the building becomes a gathering place for filmmakers, press and filmgoers. The red-carpet route runs between the square and the entrance, where spectators gather to see arriving guests.

The Palazzo has a main hall and several screening rooms. The Sala Grande, the largest cinema, seats more than 1,000 people. Other festival spaces include exhibition areas and rooms used for screenings and press events.

Inside, look for the high ceilings, frescoes, marble details and broad staircase. These grand features give the building a different character from its modernist exterior. If you have a ticket, allow time before the screening to take in the entrance and public spaces.

The Sala Grande’s large screen can affect where you prefer to sit. Consider your seat location when booking, and check that the ticket is for the correct date, especially during busy festival events.

Visiting during and outside festival season

The festival takes place on the Lido from late August to early September. This is when the Palazzo is at its busiest and screenings and related events fill the schedule. Reserve seats early for popular events, and arrive ahead of your screening if you want time to explore the building.

Outside the festival, the Lido offers a quieter setting away from Venice’s busiest visitor areas, but there are fewer activities inside the Palazzo. The building is close to the beach, and the surrounding area includes places to eat and drink. Plan your visit around a screening or event if you want to experience the cinema in use.
