Fondazione Giorgio Cini

Fondazione Giorgio Cini is a cultural centre on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, across the lagoon from central Venice.

Fondazione Giorgio Cini is a cultural centre on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, across the lagoon from central Venice. Its restored monastery complex brings together historic architecture, cloisters, gardens, archives and changing exhibitions. A guided tour is a practical way to explore areas such as the library, which is not open for independent visits. The 45-minute tour gives you a structured look around, while the island’s quieter setting offers a pause from Venice’s busier streets.

A monastery restored as a cultural centre

The foundation is on San Giorgio Maggiore, the island beside the church of the same name. In 1951, industrialist and art patron Vittorio Cini acquired the monastery and restored it in memory of his son, Giorgio. The complex now houses a cultural centre dedicated to humanist research, with archives, a library and spaces for exhibitions and events.

Its buildings bring together designs by two major Venetian architects. Palladio designed the cloister and refectory, while Baldassare Longhena designed the library. The restored monastery gives the foundation its distinctive setting, with historic rooms and courtyards alongside its cultural programme.

The Cypress Cloister is the oldest surviving part of the complex, dating to 1526. Guided visits also take in the foundation’s architectural spaces and garden areas, including a garden labyrinth. Tours last about 45 minutes, and visiting with a guide is the way to access the library.

Exhibitions change over time, so check the foundation’s website before setting out to see what is on. The programme has included Homo Faber, an exhibition centred on craftsmanship, as well as photography and art shows. The foundation also hosts cultural events and performances in the open-air Teatro Verde.

The island’s woodland chapels

Beyond the monastery buildings, a wooded area on San Giorgio Maggiore contains ten chapels created for the 2018 Architecture Biennale. Architects including Norman Foster contributed designs. They provide another stop for visitors interested in architecture and contemporary work, set apart from the historic cloisters.

The island is reached by water bus number 2. If you plan to visit the library, book a guided tour rather than expecting to enter independently. Check the website for tour details and the current programme before travelling.
