Museo M9 is a museum of Italy’s twentieth century in Mestre, in the municipality of Venice. Its exhibits trace social, political, economic, industrial and demographic change through video, audio and interactive digital displays, with most of the material available in Italian and English. The modern building is part of the visit, and children can explore the history through games and hands-on activities. The exhibits do not impose a single route, so allow time to choose your own path through the galleries.
A museum of Italy’s twentieth century

Museo M9 explores the changes that shaped Italy during the twentieth century. Its subject matter spans social, political, economic, industrial and demographic history, presenting a broad account of how life in the country changed over time.
The museum also connects that national story with Mestre. The city’s urban and social fabric underwent major changes during the century, and the museum project was conceived as part of the surrounding urban centre. M9 opened in 2018.
Learning through multimedia

Rather than relying only on written displays, the exhibitions use video, audio and interactive digital installations to present historical material. You can engage with the content through different formats, and the exhibits let you set your own pace and route.
Most of the exhibition material is in both Italian and English, which helps English-speaking visitors follow the displays. The layout does not create one prescribed flow through the museum, so take a moment to choose where to begin and how to move between sections.
A visit with children
Children can engage with the history through interactive areas, games and activities that invite them to press buttons and take part. The displays pair this hands-on experience with information about Italian history and culture, making the museum a possible choice for families with older children as well as adults.
Free lockers are available on site. The building also has a restaurant, and drinks are available in the basement.
