The villa and museum

Villa Cattolica is a neoclassical mansion in Bagheria, now home to the Renato Guttuso Museum and the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art. Its high crenellated walls give the exterior an almost castle-like appearance. The villa dates to the 18th century, when it belonged to Bagheria’s group of noble residences.

Since 1973, the villa has housed a permanent exhibition dedicated to Renato Guttuso, the self-taught painter and Bagheria native. The museum also has a space for temporary exhibitions, so displays extend beyond the permanent collection.

The collection includes Guttuso’s paintings, prints and sculptures, as well as pieces from his personal art collection. His work is often personal in character. The museum also displays art by other Sicilian artists, including Giambecchina, and works by artists such as Carlo Levi, Corrado Cagli, Carla Accardi, Antonio Sanfilippo and Angelo Savelli.

The galleries are spacious, with works shown in large rooms. Some exhibition areas are in the villa’s outbuildings. Look out for temporary displays as well as the permanent collection; they can bring a different focus to a visit.

What to expect on site

The villa’s interior has been modernized, with plain white gallery spaces that put the focus on the art. Staff can provide explanations about the works, which may be especially helpful if you want more background on Guttuso’s pieces. Some interpretation may be in Italian.

The surrounding area has changed since the villa stood amid open countryside. Modern buildings now sit nearby, and an abandoned concrete factory is visible from parts of the site. The villa remains a place to visit primarily for its art collection and exhibitions.
