Torre Salsa is a WWF-managed nature reserve on Sicily’s south coast, between Agrigento and Sciacca. Its coastline combines long sandy beaches with chalk cliffs, dunes, hills, fields and wetlands. Come for a swim or a quiet walk, then look inland to the terraced landscape and old quarries. The reserve is remote, and reaching the shore can mean a dusty drive on rough tracks, but the beaches are often nearly empty. The visitor center is in Siculiana, on Via Roma.
A protected stretch of Sicily’s south coast

Established in 1996 and managed by WWF, Torre Salsa covers more than 760 hectares between Agrigento and Sciacca. The reserve protects a varied coastal landscape: sandy shores and dunes meet chalk cliffs, wetlands, fields and hills. Its coastline extends for about six kilometres, with stretches of beach separated by cliffs and dunes.
The mix of habitats supports wildlife, including birds and Caretta caretta sea turtles. The turtles nest along this coast, so keep a respectful distance from wildlife and follow any instructions posted in the reserve.
From the shore to the hills

The sea and beaches draw many visitors, but the land behind the coast is also worth exploring. Natural terraces cut across the agricultural landscape, with streams running through deep channels towards the sea. These formations create changing views between the cliffs, fields and water.
Hiking routes lead over hills and past abandoned quarries. Autumn is a good time to explore on foot, when the reserve’s varied plant life and terrain are part of the walk. The mountain slopes and coastal cliffs give the reserve a markedly different feel from a visit focused only on swimming.
Getting to the reserve
The visitor center is at Via Roma, 156 / D, in Siculiana. Reaching the coast from the area can involve bumpy, dusty dirt tracks. The center may be hard to find, and some approaches have been complicated by private roads or locked gates, so check your route before setting out.
Take enough water for the visit, particularly in hot weather. Dogs are allowed, and paid parking is listed among the amenities. The terrain and access roads are part of the practical planning: this is a remote coastal reserve, not a beach reached by a straightforward paved drive.
