Porta Messina is the northern gateway to Taormina’s historic centre, at the top of Corso Umberto. The arch once formed part of the town’s fortifications and now marks the start of a pedestrian route through the old town towards Porta Catania. Walk along Corso Umberto to see Palazzo Corvaja, the Church of Santa Caterina and Piazza IX Aprile, whose terrace opens onto views of Mount Etna and the Ionian coast. The gate is a useful starting point for exploring Taormina on foot.

Porta Messina stands at the northern end of Corso Umberto, the main street through Taormina’s historic centre. The route runs between this gate and Porta Catania at the southern end, with squares, churches and historic buildings along the way.

The gate was part of the town’s fortifications. It was inaugurated in 1808 by Ferdinand IV of Bourbon and is also known as Porta Ferdinandea. It is one of two surviving gates in Taormina.

From Porta Messina, follow Corso Umberto towards Porta Catania. Palazzo Corvaja and the Church of Santa Caterina are close to the northern entrance. The church stands above the remains of a Roman Odeon, a small ancient theatre.

Further along, Piazza IX Aprile is a natural place to pause. Its terrace looks towards Mount Etna and the Ionian coastline. Continue to Piazza Duomo to see Taormina’s cathedral and the fountain with a female-headed centaur, a symbol of the town.

Exploring at a comfortable pace

Corso Umberto is pedestrianised and lined with shops, bars and restaurants. The main route is straightforward, but small squares and side streets invite detours. Comfortable shoes help on the cobbled paths and narrow lanes.

For a guided walk, Porta Messina is used as a meeting point for sunset promenades through the old town. These routes can include monuments such as the Odeon, the Naumachia and churches along Corso Umberto. Follow the main street to Porta Catania, or turn aside when a landmark catches your interest.
