Park Authority Mining Floristella Grottacalda is an open-air industrial archaeology park in Contrada Floristella, near Valguarnera Caropepe in Sicily. Its former sulfur mines preserve shafts, galleries and processing structures that trace the area’s mining history. Look for the calcaroni, vertical wells and Gill furnaces, then visit Palazzo Pennisi for a striking change of scale and style. Most of the site is outdoors, so bring food and check the weather before setting out. Limited signage makes a local guide or some advance reading useful.

A mining landscape preserved outdoors

Established in 1991, the park preserves the remains of two major sulfur mines. Shafts, galleries and industrial buildings document an industry that was once a pillar of the local economy. The site is an open-air museum, so its mining structures are spread across the landscape rather than gathered in a single exhibition space.

The park also contains the Cateratta del Serieri canyon, cut by the waters of the San Giovannello River. Its valley runs through Pliocene calcarenite rock, with crossed layers and geological traces of Mediterranean Sea transgression and regression during the formation of younger calcarenites. In places, the canyon walls rise steeply and contain natural caves, with visible marks left by flowing water.
