Cattedrale di San Giovanni Battista is the cathedral of Ragusa Superiore, at Piazza San Giovanni in Ragusa.

Cattedrale di San Giovanni Battista is the cathedral of Ragusa Superiore, at Piazza San Giovanni in Ragusa. Rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, it is a Baroque landmark with a richly carved central portal, monumental columns and decorated side entrances. Inside, look for the detailed interior and its chapels, paintings and sculptures. The bell tower is a separate highlight: climb it for wide views across Ragusa and the surrounding area. Outside, the square and a fountain beside the church add a pause to a walk through the upper town.

A church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist once stood in the western part of old Ragusa, in Ragusa Ibla. The 1693 earthquake severely damaged it. The church was rebuilt in the new upper town, in the Patro district, and its first foundation stone was laid on 15 April 1694. It opened for worship on 16 August, after only four months of construction.

That first building proved too small for the growing district. Work on a larger church began at the same site in 1718. Master builders Giuseppe Recupero and Giovanni Arcidiacono, both from Acireale, oversaw the project. In 1950, the church became the cathedral of the newly created Diocese of Ragusa.

Baroque details inside and out

The cathedral’s monumental entrance has rusticated columns and substantial decorative detail. Its Baroque design has connections with churches in Acireale and Catania. The central portal draws the eye, while the columns and decorated side entrances give the façade a strong architectural presence.

Inside, the current decoration dates from the 19th and 20th centuries. Marble, frescoes, chapels, paintings and sculptures reward a slower look. The church’s regular geometry and many ornamental details are easy to miss if you move through quickly, so take time to look around the interior.

The bell tower and the square

The bell tower is a climbable viewpoint above Ragusa Superiore. From the top, you can see across the city and towards the surrounding landscape, including the contrast between the upper town and Ragusa Ibla. Access information is not consistent about Sunday closures, so check locally before making the tower the focus of your visit.

Piazza San Giovanni sits in front of the cathedral, reached by broad steps. Look to the right of the church for a fountain, another detail to include while exploring the square. The cathedral is in the upper town, whose streets follow a grid from the church.

A place of worship

The cathedral is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, Ragusa’s patron saint. It remains an active place of worship, so keep your voice low and choose clothing suited to a church visit. If you want more context for the architecture and interior, an audio guide or a guide can help explain what you are seeing without relying on lengthy written descriptions.
