Piazza d'Italia

Piazza d'Italia is Sassari’s main square, just outside the old medieval walls.

Piazza d'Italia is Sassari’s main square, just outside the old medieval walls. Its broad, octagonal layout is framed by grand 19th-century buildings, including the Palazzo della Provincia, and a statue stands in the square. Come to admire the architecture, then take an evening stroll or stop at a nearby café or restaurant. The square is part of local social life and grows livelier at night, though it can feel crowded at peak times.

Piazza d’Italia lies just outside the old medieval walls and is one of Sassari’s main public spaces. Its octagonal design was drawn up by engineer Enrico Marchesi in 1837. Work began in 1872, after Italian unification, and the granite paving and two buildings framing the square were completed within four years.

The surrounding architecture reflects Sassari’s growth beyond its older centre. The Palazzo della Provincia is the most prominent building on the square, alongside other stately 19th-century façades.

Piazza d’Italia is a focal point for social life in the city. In the evening, people gather here for the passeggiata, the traditional stroll. Cafés and restaurants around the square and in the nearby streets give you places to pause for a drink or a meal.

The square is open to the public at all hours. It can be busy at peak times, so choose a quieter moment if you want more space to look around.
