Cala Luna is a sandy cove on Sardinia’s Gulf of Orosei, near Cala Gonone, framed by limestone cliffs and caves. Clear water makes it a rewarding stop for swimming and snorkeling, while the caves offer shade beside the shore. Reach the beach by boat or by a demanding hike from Cala Fuili. Boat arrivals can bring crowds and engine noise, especially later in the day, so an early visit gives you a better chance of enjoying the cove before it fills up.

The cove and its caves

Cala Luna

Cala Luna lies on the Gulf of Orosei near Cala Gonone, where the Codula di Luna reaches the coast. The sandy beach sits below steep limestone cliffs, with Mediterranean vegetation on the slopes and caves opening along the shoreline. The cove’s mix of sand, rock and clear water gives you several ways to spend time here: swim, snorkel, explore the caves or take in the cliffs from the beach.

The water is shallow close to shore before deepening farther out. Underwater, the clear conditions reveal fish and colorful scenery, which makes snorkeling a popular reason to bring a mask. The caves provide shade, but take care around the rock and do not leave marks on the walls.

Getting to Cala Luna

Cala Luna

You can reach the beach by boat or on foot. Boats run from Cala Gonone, and the ride is a simpler alternative to the demanding trail. Boat traffic can make the cove busier and noisier, especially later in the day; an early arrival is a better choice if you want a quieter stretch of beach.

The hiking route starts at Cala Fuili. The walk is challenging and takes around two hours each way in some accounts, so plan for a substantial outing rather than a short stroll. Wear suitable shoes and carry enough water, sunscreen and snacks. The beach is the reward at the end, but the route is not for anyone who wants an easy approach.

Swimming, snorkeling and time on shore

Allow time to swim and look beneath the surface, where clear water and fish make snorkeling a draw. On land, explore the caves along the beach and the limestone formations around them. The cliffs also attract climbers, with climbing areas and caves around the cove.

Cala Luna has a bar and restaurant, though no menu details are available here. If you plan to spend several hours at the beach, bring essentials rather than relying on finding everything you need on arrival. The cove can become crowded when boats arrive, so the experience may feel less secluded at busy times.

A film location on the Gulf of Orosei

Cala Luna has appeared in several films, including the original Swept Away by Lina Wertmüller and Guy Ritchie’s remake, as well as Mr Robinson. Its caves, cliffs and curved shoreline provide the distinctive setting seen on screen.

The nearby Bue Marino caves are about three kilometres away and can be visited by boat. Cala Luna is a beach stop in its own right, but the coastline also makes it possible to combine time on the sand with a boat excursion along the Gulf of Orosei.
