Via Appia Antica is an ancient road that runs south from Rome, with stretches of old cobbles, pine trees and historic sites along the way. It began as a Roman military road in 312 BC, built under the direction of censor Appius Claudius Caecus. Catacombs, mausoleums and churches give you places to pause as you walk. The route is long, so choose a section rather than setting out to cover it all. Sturdy shoes, water and sun protection help on the uneven, often exposed road.

A Roman road built for the south

The Via Appia Antica takes its name from Appius Claudius Caecus, the Roman censor who began the road in 312 BC. Its first 90 kilometres were built as a military route during the Samnite Wars. The road later continued south toward Capua and Brindisi, linking Rome with places far beyond the city.

Today, the route gives you a chance to follow parts of that historic road on foot. Some stretches retain ancient cobbles, while much of the road is relatively modern. The old stones are not always obvious from the main road, so allow time to explore the pedestrian sections.

Choosing a section to walk

The distance makes planning important. A walk of about three hours can suit a shorter outing, while seeing several sites and allowing time for breaks can take a full day. Starting near the Catacombs of St Callixtus or Santa Maria in Palmis church gives you a defined point to begin. The road is busy closer to the Aurelian Walls and becomes calmer beyond the Catacombs of St Sebastian.

Along the route, you can visit catacombs, mausoleums and churches, including the mausoleum of Cecilia Metella and the church of San Nicola. Pine trees line parts of the way, but shade is limited in summer. Uneven paving calls for sturdy footwear, and carrying water and a hat makes a long walk more manageable.
